A Power Boost for the QWERTY Faithful
For those of us who still believe that a physical keyboard is the only way to truly communicate on the go, the Minimal Phone 2 has been one of the most anticipated arrivals of 2026. While the device initially launched on Kickstarter with a respectable 8GB of RAM, the Minimal Company has just delivered a massive win for its backers: a hardware upgrade to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM across all standard configurations.
Manufacturing timelines move faster than crowdfunding milestones. We needed to place our chipset order, and rather than wait, we decided to lock in the upgrade early.
Originally, the company had tied this memory boost to a $2 million funding stretch goal. However, recognizing that production schedules wait for no one, the team decided to pull the trigger early. This ensures that every standard unit ordered during the campaign and pre-order window will ship with the higher 12GB capacity, providing a significant performance cushion for the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chipset under the hood.
More Than Just Specs
The Minimal Phone 2 represents a fascinating evolution in the niche market of distraction-free devices. By moving from the E-Ink display of its predecessor to a vibrant 3.92-inch OLED panel, the device is clearly positioning itself as a more capable daily driver. Beyond the raw memory upgrade, the keyboard itself has received a clever functional update: it is now touch-sensitive, allowing users to navigate the interface without constantly reaching up to the screen.
While the Minimal Phone 2 is a modern Android-based device, it stands as a spiritual successor to the classic BlackBerry experience. Unlike the slab-like glass rectangles that dominate the industry, this device prioritizes tactile feedback and intentional usage. It proves that you don't have to sacrifice modern multitasking capabilities—like those afforded by 12GB of RAM—to enjoy the precision and satisfaction of a physical QWERTY keyboard.
