A Boost for the QWERTY Faithful
For those of us who still believe that a physical keyboard is the only way to truly interact with a mobile device, the landscape has been sparse. However, the Minimal Company is looking to change that with the Minimal Phone 2. Recently, the project reached a significant milestone, and in a move that will delight power users, the company has announced a hardware upgrade for its upcoming device.
Originally slated to ship with 8GB of RAM for its standard configuration, the Minimal Phone 2 will now feature 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM for all standard units ordered during the Kickstarter and pre-order window. The company noted that while they initially planned this as a stretch goal for reaching $2 million in funding, they decided to accelerate the upgrade to ensure manufacturing timelines remained on track.
Every standard Minimal Phone 2 ordered during the Kickstarter and pre-order period will come with 12GB of RAM. Once pre-orders end, the standard 256GB model will return to 8GB RAM, while the 512GB model will remain at 12GB.
This upgrade is a welcome addition to a device that already stands out in a sea of glass slabs. By pairing a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor with this increased memory, the Minimal Phone 2 aims to provide a snappy, responsive experience that doesn't sacrifice the tactile satisfaction of its laser-etched, backlit QWERTY keyboard. The device, which runs a custom Android-based Minimal OS, is clearly positioning itself as a tool for productivity rather than a portal for endless scrolling.
While the industry continues to push for larger, more immersive screens, the Minimal Phone 2 doubles down on the philosophy that a phone should be a tool that helps you get things done and then get out of the way. With its 3.92-inch AMOLED display and dedicated physical keys, it offers a refreshing alternative to the standard smartphone experience, proving that there is still a vibrant market for devices that prioritize ergonomics and intentional usage.
