For those of us who still believe that a physical keyboard is the only way to truly communicate, the landscape has been a desert for far too long. That is why the arrival of the Minimal Phone 2 on Kickstarter feels like a genuine breath of fresh air. Moving away from the experimental E-Ink display of its predecessor, the Minimal Phone 2 embraces a modern 3.92-inch OLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, ensuring that the device feels as snappy as it looks.
Power and Performance
Under the hood, the device is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8300 chipset. While the initial plans called for 8GB of RAM, the company made a bold move during the campaign to upgrade all standard units to 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, ensuring that this productivity-focused machine can handle modern multitasking with ease. The battery has also seen a significant boost, now featuring a 3,600mAh Advanced Silicon-Anode cell to keep you connected throughout the day.
The Minimal Phone 2 is a focused 5G Android phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard, OLED display, and software designed to help you do more and scroll less.
Perhaps most exciting for the purists is the commitment to the typing experience. The company has expanded its offerings to include five different physical keyboard layouts to cater to a global audience. Furthermore, the device runs on Minimal OS—an Android-based interface designed to strip away the digital noise of modern smartphones. It even includes support for iMessage via the OpenBubbles service, bridging the gap between our preferred hardware and the messaging standards of the day.
With over $2 million raised on Kickstarter, it is clear that the demand for a dedicated, distraction-free QWERTY device is stronger than ever. Whether you are looking for a primary device or a secondary tool to reclaim your focus, the Minimal Phone 2 stands as a compelling testament to the enduring utility of the physical keyboard.
