A Power Boost for the QWERTY Faithful
For those of us who still believe that a physical keyboard is the only way to truly communicate on a mobile device, the Minimal Phone 2 has been one of the most anticipated releases of 2026. While the device initially launched with an 8GB RAM configuration, the Minimal Company has responded to the incredible enthusiasm from its community by fast-tracking a significant hardware upgrade. Every standard Minimal Phone 2 ordered during the current crowdfunding and pre-order window will now ship with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, ensuring that this productivity-focused machine has the headroom to handle modern Android tasks with ease.
Why the Upgrade Matters
The decision to lock in this upgrade early was driven by manufacturing timelines and a desire to reward early adopters. According to the company, while they initially planned to make the 12GB jump a stretch goal, they opted to secure the hardware orders immediately rather than waiting for the campaign to conclude. This move effectively standardizes the 12GB experience for the vast majority of backers, providing a substantial performance bump for a device that relies on a unique, command-line-driven interface to minimize digital distraction.
The Minimal Phone 2 is a 5G Android phone built around a physical QWERTY keyboard and a 3.92-inch AMOLED display, running MediaTek's Dimensity 8300 chip.
Beyond the RAM, the device continues to lean into its "modern classic" identity. With its backlit metal-dome keys and a 90Hz AMOLED display, it bridges the gap between the tactile satisfaction of a legacy BlackBerry and the requirements of a modern 5G ecosystem. It is a refreshing departure from the glass-slab monotony that dominates the current market, offering a dedicated tool for those who prefer typing over tapping.
